What's Stopping Me From Using Smart Farm Technology?
By Hekitari Team ·
The barriers to farm tech are real, but most of them are already solved. Here's each one, and why it may no longer apply to you.
The usual barriers to smart farm technology — cost, language, connectivity, and complexity — are exactly the ones Hekitari was built to remove. Most agtech fails smallholders because it's designed for large farms in the global north; a tool built for Rwanda's realities takes those obstacles off the table.
The barriers, and how they're solved
- Cost: runs on the phone you own, with monitoring that doesn't need field hardware
- Language: full Kinyarwanda and English, with picture-based navigation
- Connectivity: core features work offline and sync when you reconnect
- Complexity: designed so you can use every feature without reading a paragraph
- Trust: models trained on Rwanda-specific soil, crop, and climate data
What's left is the decision
Once the practical barriers are gone, adoption comes down to choosing to farm on data. Given the upside — up to 30% higher yields, up to 50% lower costs, and better credit access — the main thing stopping most farmers is simply not having started. The first step is small and low-risk.
